Day 9 - Deputy Booker

Time for the last day of General Convention 2015.

The Eucharist today was presided over by the current Presiding Bishop, and the Presiding Bishop - elect honored us with an amazing sermon.

Since it was the last day of legislation, and because most of our resolutions had already been
passed by the House of Bishops, we moved much more rapidly than we did in earlier days.  6:30 was our drop-dead deadline, and we finally wrapped up by 6:00.

Based on discussions with seasoned deputies, this was a very productive General Convention.  The highlights were:
  • We elected a new Presiding Bishop
  • We passed rules allowing for same-sex marriages in the Episcopal Church
  • We initiated the process for revisions of the Book of Common Prayer and the Hymnal
  • We approved structural reforms for the Episcopal Church
The House of Deputies was very well run.  A nice introduction was prepared by one of our Canadian guests, the Rev. Alan Perry [].  Strict rules are needed when 844 people are trying to do legislation in one room.  It was critical that the new electronic document and voting systems worked very well.  I certainly had my concerns, but as well as things went, I can't imagine going back to the paper system used in the past.

I appreciate the trust placed in me to attend General Convention on behalf of the Diocese of Missouri...but I will admit, it was a bit of work.
